Last night the school welcomed the parents of the future Year 7 pupils to the school. We hope they found the information useful.
Amongst the speakers was the chair of the PSA, Jakki Purser. Here is the text of her speech.
“Good evening everyone, I‘m the Chairman of the Parents and Staff Association. On behalf of the PSA I’d like to welcome you and your children to Darrick Wood.
You have made an excellent choice of school – thanks to the hard work of Dr Airey and his team, this school is outstanding in all areas.
However, as well as the dedication of the staff and the commitment of the children – the involvement of the parents is just as important in building the school community. Over the next few years you will be asked to contribute to the success of Darrick Wood and that’s what I’m here to talk about.
The PSA is an organisation through which you can help the school. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible to provide the additional extras that the school needs.
In the past our donations have been used for many things from benches in the playground to the projector and screens being used here in the main hall this evening.
I’m not sure what Dr Airey has planned for this year’s donation but I’m sure it will be put to extremely good use!
The PSA have raised tens of thousands of pounds over the years. Some of you here tonight who have older children in the school are already helping to raise those funds and, on behalf of the PSA, I thank you for your support.
To those of you new to the school – we ask that you support our fund raising efforts wherever you can – we do try to provide something for everyone!
We have struggled for support in recent years which seems unbelievable in a school of this size so please do what you can.
The first thing you could do to help is to join the Darrick Wood PSA Lottery. There was an application form included in the pack that was sent out by the school – a massive thank you to those of you who have already completed the form and either sent it into school or brought it with you tonight.
If you haven’t done that then it’s not too late!
Hopefully you should find an application form either on your chair or on a chair close to you. If not, PSA members will have forms in the dining hall or you can download one from our website.
Completed forms can be left with a PSA member in the dining hall tonight or sent into school via the main reception.
We offer a lottery number for £1 a month or 3 numbers for £2 and hold a monthly draw with cash prizes of £25, £15 and £10. If every parent here tonight were to pledge £1 a month we would raise over £3000 in the coming year – a huge amount for the school and very little to ask of you!
We run events during the year for both yourselves and your children.
The Year 7 and 8 discos are very popular with the children and are a great way for them to socialise and get to know each other outside of the classroom. These are held twice a year.
For the adults we run a quiz night each term which is always very popular… the next one will be on Saturday 26th September so put that in your diary if you enjoy a quiz. Application forms are already available on our website and will also be sent out by email early next term.
Next term we will also be running a Family Magic Night which will be held on Saturday 17th October. This is the first time we’ve tried this and we hope it will be a huge success with both the children and the parents! Full details will be on our website shortly.
Our annual Christmas Ball – which will be held on Saturday 28th November this year is another great event. Details are on our website and booking forms will be available ealy next term.
I’m not sure yet what else is on the program for next year. In the past couple of years we have offered Ladies Pampering & Shopping evenings, Bingo nights and a number of themed discos and have enjoyed varying degrees of success. We are always looking for new ideas so if you have any suggestions then please pass them onto us.
I keep mentioning our website – this can be accessed from the main school website and has details of all upcoming events and booking forms. Please do take the time to check it out occasionally to see if there’s any events planned that you may be interested in.
Along with the new Year 7 pupils each year, we also hope to see some new faces on the PSA bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm!
Seven years ago I was sitting where you are now. I signed up to the PSA after chatting to some of the PSA members in the Dining Hall although, I must admit, I never imagined that I’d be standing up here seven years later. I’ve had some really good times with the PSA – it’s extremely rewarding to see the school developing and know that you have played a small part in that!
We also need volunteers for our PSA Helpers list. If you don’t think you have the time to commit to being a PSA member but would be able to provide occasional help selling teas and coffees at school events then the Helpers list would be perfect for you!!
There are numerous ways you can get involved and we would genuinely appreciate any ideas, help or support that you can offer. There will be a number of PSA committee members in the Dining Hall who are all wearing PSA badges so you can identify them – feel free to ask them any questions you may have.
You will find a PSA table next to the refreshments where you can hand in lottery forms or register your interest in either joining the PSA or the Helpers list.
Ladies and gentlemen – thank you for listening. I hope that’s given you a flavour of what the PSA at Darrick Wood is all about! “
